ST. MARTIN PARISH SHERIFF'S OFFICE INITIATES H1N1 INFLUENZA (SWINE FLU) EDUCATION AND AWARENESS EFFORT
In December of 2008, Sheriff Ronny Theriot assembled a Pandemic Flu Task Force within the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office to address protocols and resource availability in the event of an outbreak. Based on that meeting, subcommittees were formed to handle specific tasks within the department. Sheriff Theriot stated "Our objective with forming the Task Force was to maintain continuity of services to the citizens of St. Martin Parish in the event of an outbreak."
On Monday, Representatives of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, Office of Public Health, St. Martin Parish Government, and St. Martin Hospital were present during a conference call with Governor Jindal. Following the press conference, Sheriff Ronny Theriot began taking proactive measures to maximize resource availability of first responders in the event of an outbreak in St. Martin Parish. On Tuesday, the Task Force reconvened and met with a Representative from the Department of Health and Hospitals to discuss preventative and proactive measures that SMSO can take both in their physical facilities and with their personnel. The importance of hand washing was discussed and copies of proper hand washing techniques were e-mailed to each SMSO Employee and a copy of such was placed in each restroom at each SMSO facility. Additionally, individual anti-bacterial canisters are being purchased for distribution to SMSO Employees along with biocide cleaner and personal protective equipment to be utilized at all divisions within the Sheriff's Office should an outbreak occur. How NOT to Win Friends and InFLUence People
Spread the word about the influenza vaccine, not the virus
If you've ever had influenza, or "the flu," you know it is far worse than the common cold. And while you lay in bed, exhausted, suffering from fever, body aches and terrible congestion for a week or so, you probably wondered who to blame for your illness and plotted revenge against the person who passed the flu on to you. But you may not realize that you were one of the lucky ones. Each year, on average, 36,000 Americans die of complications from the flu, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized. More . . .

SMSO VEHICLES HAVE A NEW LOOK
The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office is sporting a new design on their marked units. The new striping is more cost efficient than the former design at almost half the cost per vehicle. The original red, white, and blue striping has been replaced by black and gray striping along with a large replica of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office Badge. The new vehicle design of black, gray, and gold, corresponds with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office Uniforms creating a more contemporary look for St. Martin Parish Deputies.

NEW GPS SYSTEM
For several months, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office has been working on a GPS system that allows camp owners to register their location of their camps, along with their names and phone numbers with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office. By doing so, this will assist Emergency Personnel with locating them in the event of an emergency or problem at their camp. In addition, there are now four established landing zones available for Acadian Ambulance's Air Med to land in the event they would need to transport a victim out of the Basin. Several signs have been placed in various spots throughout the Basin to assist camp owners, recreational boaters, fishermen, and emergency response personnel in the event of an emergency. These signs are similar to the signs you would see on a roadway. The coordinates of each sign have been entered into the GPS system thereby providing coordinates for emergency response personnel in the event they would have to respond to an emergency in the basin.
